Coptic binding is a no glue sewing method. It was developed by the ancient Coptic Christians in Egypt in the 2nd century and used until the 11th century. Modern bookbinders picked up the stitch again in the 20th century.
It's used because of the unique chain stitching on the open spine. It's a favourite for sketching and journaling because it lays completely flat when opened.
